Summary

Black Beauty is an 1877 novel by English author Anna Sewell. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she was confined to her house as an invalid. The novel became an immediate bestseller, with Sewell living just long enough (five months) to see her first and only novel become a success. Although not originally intended as a children's novel, but for people who work with horses, it soon became a children's classic. While outwardly teaching animal welfare, it also contains allegorical lessons about how to treat people with kindness, sympathy and respect. Continue reading...

this book is one of the most beloved childrens stories. the reason im only given it three stars is because the storyline never appealed to me. The idea of it written in a horse's point of view is interesting, but i couldnt relate to any of the characters or what they felt, for the matter. I feel th...more...

Yet another childhood staple of mine, and like An Old Fashioned Girl, it is moral food. Yet Sewell has surpassed Alcott, and I would recommend her book to a wider audience: its themes are more powerful, more universal, and (dare I say) more necessary. The morality of Black Beauty is not about remain...more...

This book ia about a horse who learns about the cruely of mankind, as he is sold of from his home. He is sold off several times for his behavior and in the ends up where he belongs. This is a very touching story and i think that the author, Anna Sewell, wanted to induce kindness and and understan...more...

I loved this book, when I was in 4th grade!!! At times it was a bit sad when the horses were abused. POOR HORSES. I mean seriously horses don't do anything to you, they're just there to put a smile on your face and make the world feel happy!

Ooh, I still have a copy of this book! I remember in primary school we used to get these Scholastic brochures every few months, and we could return them and order children's books and DVDs and CDs. They did a sale where they were selling numerous classics for $2 each, so a few weeks later my little ...more...

I have always been a big reader as well as a lover of animals, and so I tended to gravitate towards books that focused on them as a child. Growing up there were many stories to be had about children and their horses, but this one took a look at it from the viewpoint of the animal himself, and in so...more...

Oh, this is such a sweet book and has left me sighing with satisfaction at the end. I have never read Black Beauty until now. As a child I was never a girly girl and was never into horses or ponies at all and subsequently never had any desire to read this book. I wanted to read about T...more...

Black Beauty is about a horse named black beauty who is trained to be a cart horse on a ranch. When his owners couldn't keep him any more, it made me feel sad because he was sold for a low price to people who abused him. His cart companion, Ginger was sold to the same people for the same ...more...

Black Beauty wins my award for the most inappropriate book commonly read to small children. It made me realise how many teachers harboured sadistic tendencies towards their charges. Why else would anybody read a story about carriage horses being tortured to death to a group of city children, who ha...more...

Advantages: Beautiful story Disadvantages: Sentimental account I have always been verging on the obsessed when it comes to horses. Growing up, if a book featured horses and ponies I'd devour it. I was also fanatical about horse welfare, indignant about horses being transported live t...more...
