Alan Bennett is one of the best writers I've ever read. He's smart and wise and funny and honest, and he makes it look easy. I love him.

Beautifully written memoir of the playwright Alan Bennett. Worth all 627 pages! I learned the grayish life in Britian, post WW1. Alan says the words shy & ordinary a lot, but the book is very readable!
