Beauty was as out of reach to geeky Sophie "The Sofa" Shaw as was handsome quarterback Derek Larson, who all but stepped over her on his way to class with a harem of cheerleaders in his wake. Sophie spent her Saturday nights studying with her two favorite guys--Ben and Jerry--and writing "Mrs. Derek Larson" in the margin of her physics texts.

Years later, Sophie is a reinvented, successful software designer, running in sophisticated Manhattan social circles and hiding an embarrassing secret--she's still a virgin. It seems being a size two can't cure everything. Anxious to rid herself of her "problem", she reads every how-to article she can get her hands on and decides her upcoming vacation in Mexico will provide the opportunity and anonymity she is seeking. She can return to New York without any emotional entanglements or unwanted men cluttering up her ordered life. It seems like a fool-proof, text-book plan!

And beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

And the eye happens to belong to Derek Larson. Hiding out in a Mexican resort and a bitter shadow of his former handsome self, he is the last person Sophie expects to run into. On the other hand, he might just be the right man for the job. All she has to do is stick to the book and follow the rules.
