I heard a lot of good things about it but I found it quite boring.I'm not sure i'll try "Les confessions" after that.

Much more positive than Discours sur l'origine de l'inégalité. Still quite technical... definitely not a pleasure read.

I remember reading this book on the second floor of the UC Davis Shields Library for a class on european history. Interesting that despite how well this book is quoted it makes tremendous assumptions on the nature of our relationships. First and foremost being the principle of selfishness.

Had to read this thing twice: once in 2006, and again oh so way too recently. I neither liked nor understood Rousseau in 06, and now that I understand him I like him even less. Fie on his curly French wig.

I thought the most interesting parts were when he said that there is not one form of government that is suitable for all countries, so some countries would be better under a monarch than a democracy. The other part I found interesting but disagreed with was near the end when he talked ...more...

While I did like his ideas of government more than Hobbes (and almost as much as Locke), I wanted to scream at him for AGAIN like many other early philosophers just COMPLETELY leaving women out of the government as individual and competent creatures.
