This book reminds me of the week after Christmas; completely depressing and anti-climactic. There were entire stories that I either skipped alltogether or skimmed through without much interest, and a few that I really liked but I thought this compilation was a strange mixture of topics that felt re...more...

Mary Gaitskill was one of my teachers from grad school; I read all her work. This is her best work of short stories - especially the final story, don't cry; also College Town 1980, Mirror Ball and The Arms and Legs of the Lake are some of her best writing yet.I always look forward to reading G...more...

This is another case when a book should receive 2.5 stars. I liked some of the stories in this collection, but felt it was a bit uneven. Some stories were fantastic and others were mediocre. I think Gaitskill is a much better short story writer than a novelist. I also think my love affair with her w...more...

"Mirror Ball" is probably the worst story I've ever read in my life, and then there was this upswing where the stories grew increasingly more astonishing as the book went on. This is a lot of what I love about Gaitskill--her bold capacity for failure juxtaposed with her concise and cutting...more...

After reading (and loving) Because They Wanted To, this book was a bit of a disappointment to me. There were some stories that were good, and then there were stories that were too aware of themselves, in which I felt Mary Gaitskill behind the words instead of the narrator. It's a weird feeling when ...more...

Difficult to read stories- raw, painful, dealing with hurting people. Well written and I'm glad I read them, but I had to take a longer break between stories to recover. Mary Gaitskill will be at the Hammer Museum as part of their literature series this week and I plan to go see her. It'll be intere...more...

The first few stories were boring and indulgent and I was disappointed at reading the same old crap... But then she seemed to "hit her stride" or something and the last few stories were tender, well-formed and led to a gorgeous, heartrending crescendo in the title story. I would almost r...more...

What the HELL is wrong with Mary Gaitskill? I don't necessarily have a problem with the word "cunt," I even found it used hysterically in Kill Bill, but there's just no reason for it to be used so many times in the beginning of the book. One of the characters just shuffles around mumblin...more...

I grabbed this book because everyone who reviews short stories seems to hold Gaitskill as the best of the genre. Although she can really write, I did not enjoy the reading. Miserable characters in unappealing situations, making bad choices. No one is ever happy, including the reader. I have read so...more...

I wouldn't advise reading this book. Gaitskill's writing is too loose. I've enjoyed everything I've read by this author in the past. Take some time to read Bad Behavior or Because they wanted to. Two girls Fat and Thin is also a good read if you don't mind reading about Rand and her followers. ...more...
