Summary

Young Twig lives in the Deepwoods, among the Woodtrolls, but he isnt one of them. In a brave attempt to find out where he belongs, Twig wanders into the mysterious, dangerous world beyond the Deepwoods. He meets a collection of odd companions, such as his wise guardian, the Caterbird; the Slaughterers, a peaceful race who butcher animals for their livelihood; and the vicious, bile-swilling Rotsucker. Always watching out for the horrible Gloamglozer, whose presence haunts the thoughts of all the inhabitants of The Edge, Twig steadfastly pursues his quest until he discovers his roots, not among the trees, but in the skies. . . .

Potentially part of the problem was listening to the recorded version of it, though I don't think that was the only problem. I couldn't empathize with the main character, and about 3/4 of the way through, they introduced a character that, every time a reader did that bit of dialogue, made such a sc...more...

This fantasy was full of twists and turns. I really liked the story line and how the author keeps you wanting to know what could possibly happen next. I like the use of words and the interesting names of people, creatures, animals, plants and trees. I had to ask why the Banderbear? I was not expecti...more...

I think Paul Stewart is one of the best youth writers today and this book is no exception to that. Paul introduces us to Twig and the world he calls home. Twig finds himself exploring Deepworld in his way of finding who he really is. Along the way, Twig finds himself encountering many interesting cr...more...

After the ninth or tenth time Twig was almost killed I thought that was all this book was going to be about - Twig's next struggle to NOT die - and for the most part that's really what it was, the poor boy had been almost eaten, bludgeoned, drowned, digested and a number of other things more then I ...more...

Good story for boys under 12. This first book was not written as well as the later ones in the series. This one was does however show how Twig is a real wimp and later in the series finally you see him mature. It is the story of a young boy who suddenly discovers that he is not who he thought he was...more...

I picked up the last four books of The Edge Chronicles in a good deal from Borders ($12 total!) and the first three fairly cheap on Amazon (what was I going to do with only the last four books?!). It's not too bad for kiddy sci-fi/fantasy (not sure how to categorize it). The first book is fairly s...more...

I still remember reading this book in 5th grade and being both shocked, horrified, and completely delighted by it. The world of "the Edge" is just totally fascinating to me, I loved all the pictures and the creatures and everything! I read more of this series, but this book was definitely ...more...

I would give this book 3.5 stars if I could. Think of a cross between Alice in Wonderland, Homer's Odysey, and the darkness of some of the Grimm's fairytales. There was a quest and personal discovery journey, crossed with some freaky stuff going on. Really, I was amazed, at the end, how well everyth...more...

The Edge can be a treacherous place to live. The land ends just as the name implies. It consists of seven different zones, and each is more perilous and unstable than the last. This particular tale takes place in The Deepwoods, the farthest zone from the Edge, where our protagonist Twig is raised. T...more...

I like this book because: Twig is bullied all the time for being different from a woodtroll. When he finds out he isn't one, he ends up on a journey to find out what he really is. It is a tough journey, Twig makes friends-and he loses them. But on the way... he strays from ...more...
