Oh, John Irving. You have finally, finally run out of new things to say, and so your characters live in this little world where bears run amok, boys go to prep school and wrestle, single-parent households are abundant, disgruntled Vietnam-era young men defect to Canada, women are either buxom with o...more...

A John Irving novel can be expected to contain any number or all of the following: bears, humans who appear to be bears, sex, underage sex, sexual mishaps, incest, running, cooking, the Vietnam war, New England, Canada, prep school, wrestling, writers and writing, the untimely deaths of children, th...more...

I loved A Wdiow for One Year and A Prayer for Owen Meany, so I was pretty excited when I read the review in the NYT about how Last Night In Twisted River, his newest novel, is one of his most moving books. John Irving uses similar fictional devices in his other books, but for some reason I found thi...more...

John Irving is one of the few contemporary writers of whom I am a genuine fan - I'd ordered this book before it was even released. He manages to tell epic stories with a love for detail and personality that not many authors evince. I always feel as though he is deep in the story with his character...more...

As are all Irving novels, they are definitely just that- novels. They are not stories, but more of detailed reenactments- sometimes over the course of someone's entire life- from small childhood to their 80s. "Last Night in Twisted River" does not deter from this formula. We me...more...

Last Night at Twisted River started out so promising. Set in a 1950s New Hampshire logging town called Twisted River, it starts off with a young man drowning in the river during a log drive. Witnessing this event are Dominic, and his 12 year old son, Danny. Dominic is the cook for the logging compan...more...

I love John Irving. I became a writer because of John Irving. That said, Last Night in Twisted River was not his best. The story of a cook and his son and an angry companion was touching in spots and unrelentingly repetitive in others. As usual, the characters are magnificently drawn, the...more...

Dear John Irving, The beginning was so good. Soooo good. I was even able to overlook some racial stereotyping and move forward. And that's a rareity. I didn't know if I wanted to take the time to read this whopper of 550 pages. I was ranking your book strictly junior highishly at firs...more...

Last Night in Twisted River: A Novel is a delicious read. Author and protagonist Daniel Baciagalupo is whisked away by his father from a world of a “World of Accidents,” to one where thoughtful planning ultimately prevails. In Coos County, accidents happen and many of them in mud sea...more...
