Summary

Samantha's husband has left her, and after a wacky spree of overcharging at Tiffany's on his disappearing credit card, Samantha settles down to reconstruct a life for herself and her 11-year-old son. Her eccentric mother tries to help by fixing her up with dates, including, miraculously, one that almost works, but a more pressing problem is money. Sam has not worked since her marriage, and to meet her mortgage payments, she decides to take a roommate into their house. The first is a wise older woman who offers sage advice, as does a new friend, King, a man who refuses to try to "make it" and who suggests that Samantha get out, get going, do temporary work. But her real work is this: in order to emerge from grief and the past, she has to learn how to make her own happiness, and that entails opening up not only her house but her heart, her attitude to people, including herself. In order to really see people, she has to look more favorably on herself, and with her heart. And in order to know who she is, she has to remember who she once was, way back, before she became someone else, to try and keep a man, save her marriage. This is a love story, describing not only what blossoms between a man and a woman, but more importantly, between a woman and herself, and it's a story about the beauty of home and homemaking -- about why the Martha Stewart instinct isn't all bad! And how the openness of a home can lead to change.
