At last a book by a favorite author other than Parker. I didn't realize until I got the book home that it had been an Oprah Book Club selection. Elizabeth Berg writes for women, with an understanding of women's minds and emotions. This time she follows a woman who has just been asked for a d...more...

Elizabeth Berg never disappoints, and this book is no exception. It is the first time that I have seen the similarity in her writing, as this one was much the same situation as The Year of Pleasures, which I have just finished recently. Open House deals with a divorcee and the changes she must face,...more...

I listened to this during my cross-country drive. I enjoyed it. It was just long enough, and it had a feel-good ending. No unnecessary tragedies thrown in there for shock value or anything like that. It was kind of like listening to a romantic comedy movie where sometimes the thing you really wa...more...

Liked it, really liked it...liked it, really liked it... liked it, really liked it. I guess I have to choose liked it. I really liked the writing style. It was like talking with a good friend over a cup of coffee. There were three sections that totally made me laugh and rather endeared me to the aut...more...

I love Elizabeth Berg, you can just see yourself in her characters or at least aspects of them.

This book was about something I hope I never experience - separation/divorce. The main character Samantha Morrow has to figure out how to pick up the pieces and carry-on with her life after her husband decides to pick up and leave her and her 11-year-old son Travis. The author made the character's...more...

Shallow sketches of uninteresting characters paired with the bare outline of a plot whose every development was easily guessed. Had Berg gone any deeper into any of the characters, we might have had a reason to empathize or sympathize with them, to root for them even, but instead we can hardly wait ...more...

I had to give up my prejudice against Oprah's book club, at some point accepting that most of the books she picked were interesting. Yes, they were frequently about a female protagonist having emotional issues, man issues, money issues, baby issues. Yes they are often distinctly and singularly 'femi...more...

What happens when your husband leaves and you have to make a living all on your own? It can happen...and sometimes it turns out better than imagined.

Well I just loved this book! I had avoided it because even though I like the author, I usually shun books that deal directly with my 2 biggest fears - marriage break-ups and cancer. Very early in my marriage we went through a nasty hiccup that left us seperated for a while, and I hate reading book...more...
