This is a wonderful book about science during the Romantic era. The first few chapters are best for understanding the development of science. The last few chapters are best for understanding the interactions between science and culture, mostly prose and poetry. At the beginning of the story, the Eng...more...

A fascinating history of early days of modern science and discovery as portrayed by the men and women who enlightened us during the Romantic Generation... the late 18th century and early 19th century. Much of the book follows the career of Joseph Banks from the time he sailed with Captain Cook to th...more...

It is enlightening to see how modern science evolved from the questioning and curious minds of the European and American philosophers of the 1700's and 1800's. The impact on America was overpowering and defining. Far more than the influence of religion and often in direct opposition to religion, s...more...

This book focuses on the science between Newton and Darwin - or the Romantic Scientists. Starting with Joseph Banks and including Hershel & Davy, it explores the changing view of science, the expansion of science outside the academic cloisters, and the role of the individual scientist. I like the ...more...

The book was an interesting read with an emphasis on the late 18th and early 19th centuries and the new scientific developments happening at the time. In fact the term "scientist" was developed at this time...The book begins with British explorer/botanist joining an expedition to the isla...more...

If only Science was taught like this when I was in school -- a subject driven by curiosity and an almost holy wonder. Holmes's lively prose places you right there next to these men and women of science, holding their barometers, polishing their telescope lenses and inhaling nitrous oxide. Many laug...more...

There is obviously something wrong with me. Everyone raves about this book - so far I am finding it choppy, hard to read, all over the map and not particularly well-written. Holmes's penchant for including every detail of everything he ever read about his subjects is exhausting - a better writer wou...more...

This book is a fascinating voyage back to the Romantic Age in Europe when there were still far flung parts of the globe to explore, most of the chemical elements awaited discovery, and time and space were found to be much vaster than anyone had expected. Even more wonderfully, scientists and artist...more...

A remarkable and informative book - one of the most illuminating since The Metaphysical Club. It is a dense read, a bit of slow-going, given the complexities of the topic. Holmes attempts and is successful in telling of mixing of the old arts and philosophies with the new paradigm, science. In En...more...

Using the voyages of Joseph Banks (traveling the Endeavour with Capt. Cook, 1768) and Darwin's sail on the Beagle (1831) as bookends, Holmes explores the flowering of scientific and literary exploration known as Romanticism. The book is a largely successful at combining biographic infor...more...
