This book is really a great book. I especially enjoyed reading how the smallpox swept through history, and I was intrigued with its use as a bioweapon today. It is because of this book, along with a few others, I know what I want to be if I get the chance.

This is a nonfiction thriller about biological weapons and what America is doing to prepare. He tells about the anthrax scare a couple of years ago and describes how devastating a small pox weapon could be. I like his books, especially "The Hot Zone".

A good read for someone who needs an eye-opening on the threat of smallpox for society. It seems at points to contain very redundant information from his previous book, The Hot Zone, but some may find that comforting (i.e. familiar characters/places).

Again, the best stories are true. Steven King has nothing on Richard Preston. My husband has been after me to read this for years. Now that I have, I understand why. The demon in this story is real. He has attacked and will probably be unleashed again. Too scary!

If you want to learn the history of Smallpox and want to know what the world terrorists are up to, you should pick up this book. There are a lot of fascinating facts. The only rough patches in the book is that some chapters feel like you're reading a text book.

The bar was set high with "Hot Zone" and this was close. I wonder how frequent the losing track of the samples occurs. A scary thought. It made me appreciate the intensity of an organism, exiting a window on one floor and making through another window on a different floor to another pers...

Preston is a journalist and first-rate writer. Here he focuses his investigation on the small pox virus - which, having been virtually eradicated from the natural world, is still stockpiled in the freezers of several nations. This is non-fiction that reads like the best medical thriller. Fascinati...more...

Overall I'd say this book is not as good as The Hot Zone. It feels like it was rushed to press (my book lists the copyright date as 2002), likely in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the anthrax scares in the days that followed. So despite being ostensibly about smallpox, there are somewhat...more...

Billed as a nonfiction thriller, I found this book fascinating--and absolutely terrifying. Preston details the REAL threat of bioterrorism and provides grim details about the future of our world if governments really are creating superbugs to...well...kill us all. Absurdly interesting ...more...

I liked learning about smallpox and what it does to the body and the WHO's efforts to eradicate it, but I didn't like the author's style of writing. He went into too much detail on things that weren't important to what was going on, such as what color of pants so and so was wearing, or if they were ...more...
