Fascinating biography of Ccornelius Vanderbilt and what he did to create the major corporatations as they are known today. Good businessman but too good as a parent or husband. A very well researched and written work.

It's a really big book. I only made it half way through before I had to return it to the library but I AM FASCINATED. I love the depiction of New York history, the growing up of the city and how the population spread to the west coast. Since I was reading the history of Brooke Astor and of Queen Vic...more...

Stiles is a very good writer...making some dry detail really come alive. He did a great job of contextualizing the life by describing the surrounding times. Sometimes the level of detail felt gratuitous but overall an interesting read!

Great reading because it puts this period in American history into perspective. The business "ethics" aren't so different from today's. The author gives a clear portrait of what men like Vanderbilt were really like. A long and detailed book that requires full attention, but worth the effor...

Just heard (on NPR) that this book won the National Book Award for non-fiction. I visited the Vanderbilt estate when I was in high school with my MamMaw Gini. Also, since moving into the former H.J. Heinz carriage house, I feel a strange curiosity about these former captains of industry.

Well done boigraphy of Cornelius Vanderbilt. It was actually more than a biography of Vanderbilt as a person; it was a history of the changing business climate from the early 1800's to the time of big corporations in the 1870's, partiicularly during the growth of railroads. Vanderbilt influenced it ...more...

This biography is well done. Vanderbilt was a very controversial figure. He is an American icon because he is a 19th century rags to extreme riches story. You don't succeed at the level that he did without making enemies. He was an integral part of the move from an agrarian society to an economic(...more...

More an economic history of early America than a biography. The stock market is created by the need to build railroads, the first industry too big for individuals to build. The games played in the market are also created at a time when the games weren't even illegal. The market collapses periodic...more...

A very well-researched and well-written biography of the life of Cornelius Vanderbilt. The book also provides a very good review of the growth of business, industry and the stock market in the US from the 1840s through the 1870s along with the incredible rise of Vanderbilt from relatively modest be...more...

The life of Vanderbilt is extraordinary, especially in the context of his time. He pre-dated the large corporations, railroads, and modern finance--in fact, he contributed much to the way they are shaped in modern times. The only problem in this book is the lack of much personal insight and the some...more...
