I wanted to like The Steel Remains so much more than I actually did. I was so looking forward to reading it. I've read two of Richard K. Morgan's science fiction novels, Thirteen and Altered Carbon and thought they were unique and amazing. Morgan takes sex and violence to a level I would never be...more...

A trilogy opener that's main shortcoming is that it occasionally reads like a trilogy opener. That said, it's one hell of a trilogy opener, and I'm eager to see where Morgan takes his three leads next. In talking to others about Morgan's portrayal of Ringil, his gay lead, I found that some though Mo...more...

This is supposed to be the first book of a trilogy. Audiobook narrated by Simon Vance. He's a technically good narrator but I'm getting sick of how he overuses/misuses accents. In this book I'm just not convinced that nomads of the steppes should have cockney-esque accents. Ri...more...

I'll go ahead and admit that I love Richard Morgan's work. Even Market Forces, probably his weakest novel, has something that can make me happy. So when I was up in Canada last month I took the opportunity to grab his latest book that has yet to be released in the USA. And, as usual, I'm ...more...

Like other reviews declare, this book does depart dramatically from the familiar tropes of fantasy fiction. I think the Steel Remains is riding the wave of a movement in fantasy fiction that proudly asserts deviation from the stereotypes (e.g. Mieville, Gilman, and the 'New Weird' movement that shar...more...

Viciously gritty fantasy with a twisted sense of humor and queer protagonists. Retired soldier-aristocrat seeks his cousin, sold into slavery, and stumbles into imperial politics and a clash of elder races. Well, damn. I was trying to think of a pithy way to get this book across. Because ...more...

After Altered Carbon, this is my favorite Richard K. Morgan book, and I'm hoping he'll build up this world. There are some interesting hints dropped about the strangely casual gods, and the various dimension-hopping near-humans and their tools. The main character is a typical Morgan ex-s...more...

I picked this up on the recommendation of a friend, mistakenly believing the trilogy it begins to be complete. Not so! Still, it stands reasonably well alone while leaving the reader strongly inclined to read the next book. The novel does spend the majority of the book setting things up...more...

Crammed with (mildly)graphic violence, (mildly)graphic sex, and graphic sexual violence; held together by a plot that is almost totally secondary to the glorious character and world building, this book is filled with some of the most beautiful descriptive passages I've ever read, and some of the mos...more...

Rangil Eskiath is a ornery ex-hero residing in an tavern, his great sword Ravensfriend hung on the wall, when his mother comes to visit and wants him to find a missing cousin of her family, Sherin< sold into slavery. Gil is a homosexual, although Richard Morgan, uses far worse words to describe ...more...
