What is a Fire Sprinkler?
A fire sprinkler is a fire safety device attached to the ceiling (and at times even on the floor) that is connected to a water of foam pipe. When a sprinkler detects a preset temperature, the sprinkler automatically releases water or foam to extinguish any fire that may be present in the area. This fire safety mechanism has a very high success rate and ensures the safety of things and people in the premises.
Fire sprinklers are frequently used in industrial factories, commercial establishments, office buildings, hospitals and schools. They may also be used in residential buildings and stand alone homes. Fire Sprinkler Systems are reliable fire safety devices because they reduce burn damage and alert people in the immediate area that something may be burning.
History of Fire Sprinklers
As a fire safety measure, a man named Major Harrison from the United Kingdom invented manual fire sprinklers in 1846. During that time fire sprinklers had to be turned on manually once a fire is detected. Over 25 years later, Henry Parmelee from the United States further developed manual fire sprinklers and made them automatic. Mr. Parmelee was not exactly an inventor but he thought of making them automatic to make sure that his piano factory would not burn down at night or on weekends when the workers were not around.
Since then, automatic fire sprinkler systems have been an essential part of every industrial, commercial, residential and public establishment. They are now used widely due to fire safety requirements of city governments in different countries. In fact, 40 million sprinklers are installed annually around the globe.
In the 1990’s, the ESFR Fire Sprinkler System was developed and it was designed to spray water in half the time that it would take a normal fire sprinkler would. When there is a fire, time is of the essence. The sooner the sprinkler system turns on, the better. Often, because of this difference in time, fires are completely extinguished even before the fire fighters arrive at the burning location.
The common fire sprinkler uses water but there are fire sprinkler systems that use foam. The foam used is a special kind of foam. It has chemicals and properties that will quickly extinguish fires. Foam Sprinklers are usually used in places where water will destroy the things that are being protected against fires. Examples are factories of electronics, computers and appliances. Foam is also used in places where water may aggravate the fire and endanger people from being electrocuted due to the presence of many electrical cords, sockets and items.
The Importance of Installing Fire Sprinkler Systems
Getting sprinkler systems as fire safety requirements are important. It gives business owners, landlords, school administrations, parents and many other people peace of mind that their properties, businesses and loved ones will be safe in case of a fire. Fire sprinkler systems and other fire safety mechanisms should be installed in every structure or establishment all over the world.
