Summary

Brash, determined 13-year-old Katie Bradshaw stumbles into the middle of a life-threatening adventure when she, with false bravado, tries to show her classmates that she doesn't care whether or not they accept her. As she tackles an unsolved local robbery, she discovers some hard truths about courage, stereotypes, and her own need for friends. Set in the fictional town of Watauga on the Oregon coast, this contemporary mystery-adventure novel traces the always intriguing question of "What if....?" What if Ray Collins was innocent of the crime people were SURE he had committed 20 years ago? What if pushing away her old friend Laura only makes Katie's problems worse? What if Katie discovers that Laura might actually become an ally in finding the stolen jewelry? And what if Katie learns all these things when the tide is rising and it just might be too late for both of them?

About Elizabeth C. Main

Elizabeth C. Main grew up in University Place, Washington, a beautiful but rain soaked part of the Puget Sound area. It wasn't until she and her husband Bob moved east of the Cascade Mountains in 1970 that she discovered it was possible to experience sunshine most days of the year. She has enjoyed the peacefulness of small-town life in Eastern and Central Oregon ever since. Liz and Bob and their two children, Karen and Eric, lived in Fossil and Canyon City before finally settling in Bend 22 years ago. Once the children were grown, Liz was able to focus her attention on a lifelong interest in writing. A Star for Courage is her first published young adult novel. Previously, Avalon Books published her contemporary romance novel, Richer by Far. She has published short stories and essays, and she is hard at work on her next novel. When she isn't writing, she works part-time at the Book Barn, an independent bookstore in downtown Bend. She still appreciates the Central Oregon sunshine.
