Psychological disorders are also known as mental health disorders and they are conditions that disrupt the day to day normal functioning of an individual. Such disorders are often treated by psychiatrists or even psychologists and treatments are mostly in the form of counseling sessions and therapy. There are a number of disorders that are classified under different categories of psychological disorders. Medical practitioners, researchers, and others involved in this field often tend to refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Forth edition (DSM – IV), a classification system that has the diagnostic categories and criteria for these mental disorders. Personality disorder: Personality disorders are a class of disorders where the individuals display severe aberrations in their behavior coupled with an unhealthy pattern of feelings and thoughts. Individuals suffering from personality disorder often tend to display behaviors that affect relationships and leads to a number of personal problems, which in turn causes distress, depression and extreme anxiety in the individuals. Mood disorder: Mood disorders are a class of disorders where the individuals suffering from these disorders experiences disturbances in his or her mood to such an extent that it inhibits normalcy. Bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and cyclothymic disorders are some of the types of mood disorders that people suffer from. At times these mood disorders could be substance induced too. People suffering from mood disorders tend to experience depressions, anxiety, negativity, positivity and a number of other moods depending on the type of disorder they suffer from.
Impulse-Control Disorder: Impulse control disorders are a class of disorders where impulsivity is the key feature in these disorders. Individuals with impulse control disorders are unable to control their impulses thus they might even end up causing harm to themselves as well as to people around them. Some of the impulse control disorders are kleptomania (stealing) , pyromania (impulse to start fire), trichotillomania ( impulse to pull hair), dermatillomaia (impulse to pick skin) and even pathological gambling.
Eating disorders: Eating disorders are a class of disorders that are usually characterized by eating habits that are not normal. This could involve excessive consumption of food or insufficient consumption of food. This disorder is not only detrimental to the physical health of an individual but also harms the emotional well being of a person. Some of the eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, rumination disorder and bulimia nervosa.
Developmental disorders: Developmental disorders are class of disorders that occurs at the developmental stage in a child and it often affects the physical and mental health of the child. Some of the developmental disorders are mental retardation, autism, communication disorder, learning disabilities and conduct disorder.
These are some of the categories of psychological disorders observed in human beings. Each disorder has a specific set of symptoms and according to the symptoms the diagnosis methods and the treatment also varies. However most of the treatments for all psychological disorders include therapy and counseling sessions. Only in extreme cases, when the patient is believed to be a threat to his or her own well being as well as the safety of the others around him or her, are medications recommended. If any symptoms pertaining to a psychological disorder are noticed in an individual, immediate attention should be given to the situation before things at hand worsen or gets out of control.
