Hi I am Brian and I own a successful computer repair business. Starting a computer repair business isn’t hard; but making it successful long-term takes a great deal of dedication, and a good mix of blood, sweat, and tears. Many people get their start as a computer technician because family and friends know that you are good with computers. They may start out helping for free, then at some point someone is going to push a $20 bill your direction across a table. In that glorious moment a lightbulb turns on in the computer guy’s head “Wow! I can make money doing something I love!” So for many this is where it all begins.
Fixing the computers is the easy part of the business for most. The real challenging parts are keeping your accounts in order, following-up on customers, and attracting new customers. But the biggest challenge of them all is growing the business and hiring people. Oh yea and keeping all the bills paid through this process.
What I can tell you from my last 10 years running a computer repair company, and growing from just ME as the only employee into a staff of 8 is this: Do what you love. If you are passionate about helping people with computers, you need to follow your dream. If it is just something you know How to do, but you would rather be doing something else…you need to run the other way from starting a computer repair business. Live is too short to spend your days doing a job you hate. Follow your passion and your dreams will be fulfilled.
The best way to get started is to have an experienced business person help you write a solid business plan. Sticking with this business plan (but reviewing frequently) will help you stay on the right track.
Give your family and friends great discounts on your services…but do NOT give any service out for free to ANYONE. Once you are servicing all of your family and friends, politely explain to them that you are working to grow your business. Ask them to email everyone on their contact list your information and a recommendation of your work. You will have an exploding phone line overnight. In fact, don’t request this of ALL your family and friends at the same time. Stagger this out, because you will likely get several calls from EACH person who emails out to recommend you.
Good luck in your endeavors!
