Women Bodybuilders Take Over
It seems Canada is producing a lot of top quality women bodybuilders. Last year we saw Melody Spetko become an IFBB Pro bodybuilder. She was competiting for years trying to win the elusive pro card in the women division. The battle for her was close and she beat the 2nd place finisher by a very narrow margin. She did her first professional competition in Toronto and placed 13th. Look for her to be competiting again in the near future.
Just recently at the 2011 IFBB North Americans, another Canadian turned pro. She hadn’t competed in awhile so no one really saw her coming until she stepped on stage. Gillian Kovack from Alberta surprised the audience by beating her competition and winning the overall to get her IFBB Pro card. She joins the ranks of Candian Female IFBB Pros.
Canada has recently had a lot of success in the women bodybuilding division. From it’s first women IFBB pro in the nineteen eighties all the way up to present day, the quality has remained top tier and they can hold their own on the world stage.
In general, women bodybuilding isn’t a popular sport due to the fact that very muscular women are intimidating and may look masculine. There is a sub-culture that adores women bodybuilding and have sites dedicated to promote them and show them off. Some sites are professional in nature and tasteful while others are much more shady and can border x-rated sites. The same goes for the male bodybuilding genre. There are sites that follow the sport and other sites that are more for what are called worshippers. Those who may get excitement from seeing pictures or videos of muscular men or women.
The sport is not that main stream as it is often associated with anabolic use and thus not taken seriously by major sports organizations or the olympics. There has been a trend of fitness divisions getting popular lately which are very closely tied to the bodybuilding sport. The difference is the competitors are not as muscular and they are pushed to appear in fitness magazines or commercials. It is something to watch in the future as it may change the sport in the long run and actually benefit it.
